It seems like this class just flew by. For me this class wasn't anything new as almost every story we read i had already read in senior year of high school. However it was really interesting to see how, in the space of two years, those same stories seemed different to me. Stories like The Necklace, The Cask of Amontillado, and Hamlet. when i was eighteen I read those stories but thats all they were, stories. Now i can see what they really mean, the meaning behind the words and appreciate it much more than i ever could two years ago.
I still can't say that Hamlet is my favorite, it will probably always be my least favorite of all Shakespeares plays, but I can say I have a new appreciation for it. I have always been good a reading, I read at college level when i was eight, but i never liked to read anything that wasn't superficial. I was looking back in my blogs and i wrote "Just because a book is a fad doesn''t mean it isn't good." and while that statement is true this class helped me get over my dislike of classics,
My sister has always been into reading Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters among others and i always swore I would never read such boring books but after we started Hamlet I decided to start reading Sense and Sensibility and found that i actually loved it. It is so much different to be able to read a book and disect it, what the author is trying to convey and what the message really is, than to just read the surface and not try to get deeper into it.
I guess this class helped me realize that just because a book is old doesn't mean it isn't worth a try. I don't think I fully appreciate all formsof literature just yet. It's not like this class is going to magically change how everyone looks at literature but i am definitely on the right track towards appreciating more.
more than my appreciation, I think my understanding has improved as well. Like i said in Amanda's blog "I completely understand. when i was a senior i read hamlet and was like what?? then i watched the modernized film version and was able to understand the actual play." being able to understand what you read on a deeper level is probably the most important component to reading.
Overall i really enjoyed this class and i feel like I got a lot out of it. If nothing else, at least I finally understand Hamlet ;).

I'm really glad you feel like you got something out of the class, Rachel. I'm a big fan of Jane Austen, too, so if this class helped you open up to her, that's a great victory! I know you love modern film adaptations of old literary works; so what did you think of Bridget Jones' Diary? That's Pride and Prejudice remade! Enjoy that Jane! Jared
